Why Regular Servicing is Essential

Heat pumps work tirelessly to regulate your home’s temperature, and like any hardworking appliance, they require regular maintenance to function optimally. Over time, components can wear out, and without proper servicing, your heat pump may become less efficient, leading to higher energy bills and potential breakdowns.

Benefits of Heat Pump Servicing

  1. Improved Efficiency: Regular maintenance helps your heat pump run more efficiently, reducing energy consumption and lowering your utility bills.
  2. Extended Lifespan: Servicing can extend the lifespan of your heat pump by addressing minor issues before they become major problems.
  3. Enhanced Performance: A well-maintained heat pump provides consistent and reliable heating and cooling, ensuring your home remains comfortable year-round.
  4. Cost Savings: Preventative maintenance can save you money by reducing the need for costly repairs and improving the overall efficiency of your system.

What Does Heat Pump Servicing Involve?

A comprehensive heat pump service includes several key steps to ensure your system is in top condition:

  • Inspection and Cleaning: Technicians will inspect and clean the various components of your heat pump, including the coils, filters, and fans. This helps to remove any dirt or debris that may be affecting performance.
  • Checking Refrigerant Levels: Proper refrigerant levels are essential for efficient operation. Technicians will check and adjust these levels as needed.
  • Testing and Calibration: The system’s controls and thermostat will be tested and calibrated to ensure they are working correctly.
  • Lubrication and Tightening: Moving parts will be lubricated, and any loose connections will be tightened to prevent wear and tear.

When to Schedule Heat Pump Servicing

It’s recommended to have your heat pump serviced at least once a year, ideally before the start of the heating or cooling season. Regular servicing can help you avoid unexpected breakdowns and ensure your system is ready to handle the demands of the upcoming season.

Proper insulation helps maintain consistent indoor temperatures, reduces energy bills, and minimizes your environmental footprint. However, while DIY projects may seem appealing for cost savings or simplicity, insulation installation is not a task to take lightly.

Improperly installed insulation can lead to energy inefficiency, moisture problems, and even health risks, ultimately costing you more in the long run. Professional insulation installers bring the expertise, tools, and knowledge to ensure the job is done safely and effectively. In this article, we’ll explore the key reasons why hiring professionals for your insulation needs is the best decision for your home and your peace of mind.

Expert Assessment and Recommendations

Professionals from Awarua Synergy can conduct a thorough assessment of your home to determine the most effective insulation solutions. They consider factors such as the type of insulation, the areas that need insulation, and the specific needs of your home based on its design and location.

Proper Installation Techniques

Incorrectly installed insulation can lead to gaps, compression, and other issues that reduce its effectiveness. Professionals have the training and experience to install insulation correctly, ensuring maximum efficiency and performance.

Safety Considerations

Installing insulation can involve working in confined spaces, handling materials that may cause irritation, and dealing with electrical wiring. Professionals are equipped with the necessary safety gear and knowledge to handle these hazards safely.

Compliance with Regulations

There are specific building codes and regulations regarding insulation in New Zealand. Professionals are familiar with these requirements and ensure that your insulation meets all legal standards.

Quality Materials

Awarua Synergy uses high-quality insulation materials that are suited to the harsh conditions of Southland and parts of Otago. Professionals can recommend the best products for your home, such as eco-friendly options like Mammoth and Terra Lana.

Long-Term Savings

Creating a healthy home is essential for the well-being and comfort of your family. With most of us spending up to 90% of our time indoors, ensuring clean air inside the home is crucial,  especially for children and older family members.  Indoor air quality is affected by moisture, mould and airborne particles, mostly created from everyday living.  To help your family breathe easy, it’s important to address these issues.

Here are 11 quick tips to improve your home’s air quality by reducing moisture, mould, and other harmful particles:

Use Your Extraction Fan
Always turn on your extraction fan while showering and leave it running afterward to clear out moisture and steam. Even after the water stops, steam lingers in the air and can create problems.

Let the Dishwasher Finish Drying
Avoid opening the dishwasher mid-cycle. The steam released adds unnecessary moisture to your kitchen. Let the drying cycle complete, so the water drains away properly.

Open Windows and Doors Daily
This simple habit can significantly improve air quality. Opening doors and windows during the day helps replace stale, moist air with fresh, clean air. This is particularly important in winter when homes tend to be closed up.

Use Electric Heating
Unflued gas heaters and older fireplaces can add moisture and harmful particles to your home. Instead, opt for electric heating methods like heat pumps to keep your home warm without compromising air quality.

Avoid Drying Laundry Indoors
Drying clothes indoors can release up to 5 litres of moisture into your home per load. If you must dry laundry indoors, use a dehumidifier or run an extraction fan. For dryers, ensure the vent leads outside.

Keep an Eye on Mould
Mould can have serious health implications. If your home’s humidity exceeds 60% RH, it’s time to check for mould. Look at wallpaper, flooring, window frames, and corners. Use vinegar to clean it, but remember, lowering humidity is the key to preventing it permanently.

Leave Space Between Furniture and Walls
A small gap between furniture and walls allows air to circulate, reducing mould and mildew growth. Similarly, leave wardrobe and cupboard doors slightly open and avoid overfilling them to promote airflow.

Fix Leaks Promptly
Leaks can lead to increased humidity and higher heating or water bills. Check for gaps or cracks in walls, windows, and roofs, and ensure taps and plumbing connections are tight.

Clean Gutters and Drains
Blocked gutters and drains can cause rainwater to pool and seep into your walls or roof, leading to hidden mould issues. Regularly clear out debris to ensure proper water flow.

Install Ground Moisture Barriers
A cost-effective way to combat rising moisture is to lay a polythene sheet under your home. This barrier prevents moisture from the ground or foundation from seeping into your floors. Learn more.

Consider a Ventilation System
Maintaining good indoor air quality can be challenging with busy schedules or during bad weather. A ventilation system works around the clock to clean and filter your air, reducing moisture, mould, and other particles automatically.

Awarua Synergy, leading suppliers and installers of cost-effective, energy-efficient products for Southland homes, farms, and businesses, are proudly marking their 20th anniversary this month.

Awarua Synergy was developed in 2004 from the Bluff Healthy Homes project, which worked to ensure the people of Bluff had better protection against the cold winter climate.

General Manager Sumaria Beaton-Sikisini said this proved so successful the next logical step was to offer some of its best products, services and ideas to the wider region.

“It’s incredible to think that we’ve evolved from a concept, figuring things out in a wee building on Te Rau Aroha marae, to the successful operation we are today,” she said.

Quickly gaining traction, Awarua Synergy has gone from strength to strength, helping the community better understand the unique needs of a challenging climate and the crucial benefits of living in a warm, dry, healthy home.

“Now we travel throughout the country sharing our knowledge and expert advice with communities as far away as the Chatham Islands,” she said.

People come away from Healthy Homes workshops amazed at the breadth and wealth of knowledge, practical advice and tips that can be used to make a real change in their lives from the minute they get home, she said.

Southland Business Chamber CEO Sheree Carey said her team had recently attended one of Awarua Synergy’s workshop sessions.

“Sumaria provided a really informative workshop for our team,” Carey said.

“It was great to dispel some myths about homes and learn about the easy fixes we can do to ensure our team are warm and healthy. I would recommend all workplaces provide this session to their staff.”

Awarua Synergy also provide the best the world has to offer in products and solutions to help combat the harsh Southern climate.

“We’re not just about insulation – we have heating, hot water, ventilation and LED lighting that would have blown our minds twenty years ago. We’re really out here scouring the world for the best of the best and bringing it home,” Beaton-Sikisini said.

Twenty years may seem like a long time but it’s just the beginning, she said.

“There’s constant change in how we look at keeping a home healthy and we’re right in amongst it. It’s been a wonderful journey so far and there’s still miles to go.”
